I started back in the 1980s, flying for the Civil Air Patrol as an observer/navigator. I did some CFI training but never finished my license. When I left the job I had before I started my company, I told my wife that I wanted to finish my private pilot's license. So about five years ago, I finished my private, got my instrument, and my commercial, too.
I’ve owned a Cessna 182 before this, and a Pilatus PC-12 for my company. This was my first time using AOPA to finance my new Cessna 206. Personally, I love flying my 206 more than the Pilatus when it's just me or my family. I installed every bell and whistle you can in it, including a satellite phone.
My overall experience working with AOPA Finance was incredibly easy. The key to being successful and getting this done quickly--which I kind of stumbled over for a couple of days--is getting all the documents uploaded into the portal. It wasn't a process or them delaying the deal, it was me not understanding that.
Once I understood, I uploaded everything. And then within five days or less, AOPA Finance notified me of my approval. And then they transferred me directly to the to the credit union, which happened to be in Florida. The guy called me, and we closed within days.
It was surprising how fast the process was. I think it took two weeks when it was all said and done. To me, that was very fast. Because it's a new aircraft, it was a little bit faster since I didn't have to worry about inspections. But the financing was quick. I was shocked.
I think the key is the paperwork. If you have questions, ask. Would I use AOPA Finance again? Absolutely. In fact, I'd probably do it better next time around, because I know exactly what I need.
