I started flying when I was 15 on a Civil Air Patrol scholarship, and I'm 56 now, so that's been quite a long time. I soloed when I was 16 and got a private pilot's license when I was 17, with the help of CAP.
I moved to State College, Pennsylvania, famous for flying gliders and did a lot of glider flying. I got into the soaring community pretty heavily and was even president of the Penn State Soaring Club.
The first airplane I purchased was a clip wing J3 cub, during my aerobatics phase. I liked tail wheel. I kid my wife that we buy and sell airplanes. We're just not good at selling them. There was a point where we owned nine airplanes.
