From Solo Flights to Aircraft Ownership

A Pilot’s Journey with AOPA’s Support

I started flying when I was 15 on a Civil Air Patrol scholarship, and I'm 56 now, so that's been quite a long time. I soloed when I was 16 and got a private pilot's license when I was 17, with the help of CAP.

I moved to State College, Pennsylvania, famous for flying gliders and did a lot of glider flying. I got into the soaring community pretty heavily and was even president of the Penn State Soaring Club.

The first airplane I purchased was a clip wing J3 cub, during my aerobatics phase. I liked tail wheel. I kid my wife that we buy and sell airplanes. We're just not good at selling them. There was a point where we owned nine airplanes. As co-chair of the Daytona Beach Class C airspace modification, I'm grateful that AOPA helps bring issues that are important to GA pilots to Washington. To the greatest extent possible, I'm here to support AOPA.

Recently, I purchased a Van’s RV7 and financed it through AOPA Finance, which was a really good experience. The process was painless. AOPA Finance helps in every part of the process, so I was really happy with the way it turned out. I registered the plane through an LLC that I own.

AOPA Finance’s portal made it very easy. As loan documents are uploaded, they review and check off the documents, so you immediately have feedback of whether you are in the right spot or not. The process worked really well for me.

If you go to the AOPA Finance website, they have information on every aspect of aircraft ownership, as opposed to going to a bank and trying to figure everything out with the non-aviation people. Having aviation experts is the key to being really helpful. AOPA Finance has lots of resources, and it's not just the finance part. They know how to put your paperwork together and advise on the whole process.

If you find something missing on the website or not quite as expected, you can easily pick up the phone and call. AOPA Finance is great at responding quickly with the information you need. Not only is their online portal efficient, but they also have real people behind the scenes who are ready to assist with every aspect of the process. Both of these features were incredibly helpful to me.

Great advice. Great rates. Helpful and responsive reps you can trust. Three good reasons to turn to AOPA Aviation Finance when you are buying or refinancing an airplane.
